Puget Sound Stream Benthos
Macroinvertebrate Sampling Program, City of Federal Way
All field sampling methods have been consistent with those of Fore et al., 1996 and Karr and Chu, 2001. In 2003, methods were modified per Chad Wiseman, Department of Ecology.Prior to 2003, a Surber sampler with cod end (500-µm mesh, 1.0 ft2 frame) was used to collect 1 – 1 square foot sample for each replicate at each site. Thus, each replicate equaled a 1-Surber sample (1.0 ft2 stream substrate).Beginning in 2003, a Surber sampler with cod end (500-µm mesh, 1.0 ft2 frame) was used to collect 3 – 1 square foot samples for each replicate at each site. Thus, three riffles were sampled at each site replicate, each sample equaling a three-Surber composite (3.0 ft2 stream substrate).
Method: Surber
